Welcome
back to another edition of the Guardian Tech Watch. Last month we
asked you what you'd like to learn about in the next issue. Although
the results were close, managed security came in as the winner, followed
by VoIP and network monitoring/management. The latter two topics will
be on the survey this month, so be sure to get your vote in for October's
topic. I hope you enjoy this month's coverage on managed security.
Also, be sure to check out Norlight's newest managed security products.
Best regards,

A
Future With No Security Worries?
Network
security is on the mind of most IT employees these days. Add in
regulations from the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability
Act (HIPAA), Sarbanes-Oxley and the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA),
and now CEOs and CFOs are worrying about security too. Wouldn't
it be great if you didn't have to worry about security anymore?
According to a recent study, you might not have to.
The Yankee Group just released a study that says by 2010, 90 percent
of security operations will be outsourced. If this trend holds true,
the market for managed security services will explode to $3.7 billion
by 2010.
So what is driving this surge in security outsourcing? Most of us
can answer that question just by looking at our to-do lists. Faster
virus and worm attacks make it nearly impossible to catch every
one - and when we get hit with one, we find ourselves scrambling
for a resolution. Also, as we constantly work to monitor vulnerabilities
and update patches, the proliferation of so called "zero-day" attacks
are exploiting vulnerabilities before they are even known.
Other contributing factors, such as the regulatory environment and
the trend of pushing out the network perimeter, all create more
work for us and make the outsourcing option much more attractive.
The Yankee Group says that organizations will initially outsource
security for perimeter defenses, but eventually will look for managed
security service providers (MSSPs) to provide inside-the-firewall
protection.
MSSPs, including Norlight, are preparing to help customers defend
against these faster attacks and undefined network perimeters with
new solutions that go above and beyond traditional network defenses.
Hardware-based, "security gateways" are among the new services available
in the arsenal of network defense tools.
Security gateways are like a firewall that sits at the edge of your
network, scanning traffic in real-time. For example, Norlight's
new security gateway will scan Web traffic, e-mail, file transfers
and even VPN links, all while the Guardians of Data manage the system
for you.
Don't forget, however, that many newer solutions like security gateways
aren't all managed like Norlight's. With an un-managed solution
you still have loads of management and monitoring to take care of,
such as configuration, updating patches, monitoring vulnerabilities,
and responding to incidents. With a workload like this, who has
time for their real job? Maybe it's time to outsource your security
needs and mark another item off of your to-do list.
